Prior to taking this journalism course, I had rarely
considered what it means to be a critical consumer of the news and media. But
after being on the side of the reporter, I have come to understand that
consuming your news critically is absolutely vital. Many individuals are
passive when it comes to their consumption and will find some bit of
information from a news source, and pass it on as fact. This becomes
problematic because there are a plethora of sources that do not fact check and
post thinks preemptively. As the news consuming citizen, however, we have to be
able to determine what news we can trust and what we cannot. As important as it
is for a reporter to double check their facts and information, it is equally
important for citizens to do the same before passing it on as fact. To do this,
one must find news sources that they can trust and cross reference the facts to
see who has the most reputable information. Critically consuming is becoming
more and more important because of the constant reporting that goes on and the availability
of information to the average citizen.
