A
local seventeen year-old was discovered dead on a remote portion of South Beach
Monday morning, raising concern of a possible shark attack near the Shoal bell
buoy.
Chrissie Watson, a senior at Amity
High School, was found dead on the shores of South Beach. Police Deputy Jay
Hendricks located Watson’ mangled body after receiving notification that the
teen had not returned from the water the prior evening. Hendricks referred to
the body as “dismembered” by the time he saw it at 8 a.m Monday morning.
Former island resident Christopher
P. Hoggenbottam III, reported Watson missing at approximately 6 a.m., when she
did not resurface after entering the water alone for a swim shortly after 11
p.m.
The two were said to have gone to a
remote portion of the beach for a swim after leaving a beach party where they
were allegedly consuming alcohol and smoking marijuana.
The cause of death remains unknown,
as a medical examiner performs an autopsy. Although the body was severely
mangled, there are no suspects at this time. As Amity officials continue to
investigate, they reassure citizens and visitors that they are in no danger on
the Island and may continue activities as usual.
